MARCH 2014 NEWSLETTER
Dear Friends of Heartland Gallery,
There have been lots of changes this past month for Heartland Gallery, and it has been an emotional roller coaster for me, as you can imagine. As of yesterday, my two booths in the Chicago area are now closed. I removed every last item, spackled and re-painted the walls, and waved a sad goodbye to my friends in both the Andersonville Galleria and The Galleria in Evanston. I hope to visit these fine venues though as often as I can, and I hope you will do the same.
In other news, I recently finished setting up my booth in Champaign, and it opened “softly” on Tuesday. That makes five moves for Heartland Gallery in just two short months’ time, and I am truly exhausted. I am also very excited about my two new ventures, inside The Vault Arts Collective, at 100 N. Main St. in Tuscola, and inside Crossroads Corner Consignment ( North), in The Whiteline Building at 723 S. Neil St., in Champaign, which also houses El Toro Mexican Restaurant, The Gaming Goat, The Upper Bout guitar and music store, and the original Crossroads South space just off the parking lot. Both venues have a lot to offer, and I do hope you will visit both of my new locations, because they are different from one another and I have a unique combination of items displayed in each location.
The Vault Arts Collective in Tuscola houses the art and crafts of over 60 Central Illinois artists, as well as some artist studios, and a library of art books. In addition, Heartland Gallery and Kalarte Gallery each rent a small space to display our collections of art from abroad. I am currently featuring many paintings and ceramic items, as well as small glass and wood sculptures, art prints, and art cards. I also have a jewelry showcase downstairs near the entrance. In early March, I will be renting an additional wall space to feature more art, including some of my own Celticscapes photography. The hours at The Vault are 10am to 6pm every day.
Crossroads Corner Consignment is a privately owned consignment business that also rents booth-sized spaces to approximately 40 vendors in two separate 5000 square foot spaces. Crossroads features new and gently used home décor, vintage furniture, local art, gift items, vintage clothing and jewelry, and much more. Some well-known vendors include Carrie’s, which moved from downtown Champaign, and The Prairie Peddler from Arcola. Heartland Gallery’s booth will concentrate on smaller art and gift items, as well as some textiles and jewelry. Don’t forget that St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner on March 17. Hours at Crossroads are 10am-6pm Monday through Saturday, and Noon to 5pm on Sunday.
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE at THE VAULT
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, events take place on the first Saturday of each month at The Vault, and March is no exception. On this coming Saturday, March 1, from 6-10pm, many of the 60 or so artists of The Vault will be available to demonstrate their art or craft from 6-10pm. This is a free event, and you are strongly encouraged to attend. While browsing and chatting with the artists and guests, you are welcome to feast on snacks and drinks. The building itself is a sight to behold, as it was recently renovated by the owner, John McDevitt, using reclaimed wood for trim and other decoration. Heartland Gallery is located on the second floor and to the right, facing the windows on the east side of the building. Please check out the website at thevaultarts.com and “like” their Facebook page. I look forward to seeing many of you at this upcoming event.
GRAND OPENING at CROSSROADS CORNER CONSIGNMENT
The grand opening for the new North section at Crossroads will be held from 5-9pm on Saturday, March 8. Though the space is currently open for business, there are still yet a couple more vendors that will be moving in, so I hope you will plan to visit during the Grand Opening. There will be live music and a wine-tasting, so please mark your calendar for this special event, check out the Crossroads Corner Consignment Facebook page and “like” it, or call 217-954-1100 for more info.
CONCERT with THE HENRY GIRLS at The UPPER BOUT
I am delighted to announce that The Upper Bout will be the venue for The Henry Girls concert on Monday, March 10th at 7:30pm. The Upper Bout guitar and music store is in the very same building as my new booth, at 723 S. Neil St. , Champaign. As mentioned in my last newsletter, The Henry Girls are an Irish “folk and roots” trio from Co. Donegal, Ireland. I had the pleasure of meeting these three sisters at a bus station in Derry, while traveling through Northern Ireland last January. The concert is being co-presented by Heartland Gallery, Sylvia’s Irish Inn, and The Upper Bout, and is partially funded by Culture Ireland. Admission will be $15 CASH or CHECK ONLY($10 for students and seniors). Since seating is very limited, we ask that you reserve your seats, at the very least, by e-mailing me at email@example.com or calling my cell phone at 217-377-4502 with the number of seats requested. Tickets can also be purchased in advance (cash or check) beginning March 1 at The Upper Bout. To get a preview of what this group has to offer, Kevin Kelly will be hosting The Henry Girls live on his Live & Local radio show on WILL-FM90.9 at 4pm on the day of the concert. For more info on the group, please visit www.thehenrygirls.com. Also, if you own or have access to some folding chairs, please contact me before this event.
OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS
The following concerts are not Heartland Gallery events. They are presented by The Piper’s Hut Concert Series, which I highly recommend. As you probably know, many of the Piper’s Hut concerts were previously hosted by Heartland Gallery in my downtown Urbana space, and you can rest assured that any musicians booked by Piper’s Hut are worth your ticket purchase. Jim Malcolm performed twice in my former space, and I look forward to seeing and hearing him again. Visit www.pipers-hut.com for more info and ticket sales.
