FEBRUARY 2014 NEWSLETTER
Dear Friends of Heartland Gallery,
It has been a while since I have written. January has been a long and difficult month due to the frigid weather and snow, having to close down and move the gallery during the aforementioned weather, and an additional unplanned stressful situation. A family member became very seriously ill and has been hospitalized since late December, just after my closing. As you can imagine, this created complete havoc in our lives for several weeks, causing delays in packing and organizing the move from Main Street in downtown Urbana, and all of our plans were put “on hold” for a while. I am very happy to report that our beloved family member, though still hospitalized, is now slowly but surely on the mend. Thanks to much help from good friends and family, and the patience and generosity of our landlords at 112 W. Main, we eventually managed to get everything out of our space and into our two storage units, our house, and a new booth space that I’ve rented in Tuscola.
THE VAULT ARTS COLLECTIVE
My new space is in a newly renovated former bank building at 100 N. Main Street in downtown Tuscola, just south of Flesor’s Candy Kitchen. It is now “The Vault Arts Collective” and it houses more than 60 other artists. The current owner of the building, John McDevitt, moved his woodworking business, Yellow Dog Studio, as well as various other members of the arts collective, from their original location in an old shoe factory in Sullivan IL. John is a talented artist who creates furniture, art and other décor from re-claimed wood. With financial assistance from the city, he was able to complete the renovation of the building himself. It is simply beautiful, and you must see it. Heartland Gallery is located on the second floor and to the right, facing the windows on the east side of the building. Please check out the website at thevaultarts.com or their Facebook page, and be sure to visit when you are able.
SPECIAL EVENT at THE VAULT
I invite you to join me (and the other artists of The Vault) this coming Saturday evening, February 1, from 6-10pm for a special February holiday-themed event entitled “The Lonely Hearts Club and Dead President’s Society Ball.” There will be plenty of refreshments available, as well as live music by two bands, The Diva & The Dude (Kathy Harden and Andy Baylor), and The Ex-Bombers. Speed painter Karl Jendry will be demonstrating his art, and WPGU radio will be broadcasting live by remote. Monthly events always take place at The Vault on “first Saturdays.”
ANOTHER NEW SPACE
My most recent news is that I have also signed a contract to rent a space in Crossroads Corner Consignment at 723 S. Neil St. in Champaign, in the old JBJ building, now called the Whiteline Building. This building also houses El Toro Mexican Restaurant as well as a handful of other businesses. Crossroads is currently renovating another space in the building and expanding with over 5000 square feet of new space. It will be ready for an opening on Monday, February 24th. My booth space will be in this newly renovated section. Please see www.crossroadscornerconsignment.com for more info. And all of this, you might ask, when I said I’d be taking a break. But, the good news for me is that I won’t need to be in either of my new spaces on a daily basis.
ANDERSONVILLE and EVANSTON GALLERIAS
I am sad to report that in light of recent events in our lives and for my own peace of mind in moving forward, I have had to make the very difficult decision to close my two booths in the Chicago area at the end of February. Since I will now have two booth locations closer to home, I have been trying to re-evaluate my ability to keep the Chicago ones open. Due to the long commute, and my desire to simplify my life as much as possible, I feel it is in my best interest to make the necessary changes now. Therefore, I will have a CLOSE-OUT SALE on all remaining items in my booths. Everything will be 25% OFF from Sunday, February 2nd through Saturday, February 22. The sale will end on February 22, so that I can have a week to clean up the spaces and re-paint the walls. Please drop by at 5247 N. Clark St. in Chicago, or at 1627 Sherman Avenue in Evanston, to take advantage of this special CLOSE- OUT sale.
If you happen to live in or be in the Chicago area at any time, please continue to visit and shop at the Gallerias often, as they are both filled with many exciting artists and entrepreneurs. The late-night monthly events will begin again in April, but there is always something new and fresh at these fine venues. And the surrounding neighborhoods boast some of the best restaurants, cafés and bars that the city has to offer. Visit their websites at www.andersonvillegalleria.com and www.galleriainevanston.com and “like” their Facebook pages.
CONCERT with THE HENRY GIRLS
I am excited to report that I will be hosting a concert on Monday, March 10th, one week prior to St. Patrick’s Day, with an Irish “folk and roots” trio from Co. Donegal, Ireland, called The Henry Girls. I had the pleasure of meeting the three sisters at a train station in Derry, while traveling through Northern Ireland last January. I gave one of them my business card and said to contact me the next time they’d be touring the U.S. Since I no longer have my own storefront venue, the exact location for this concert is yet to be determined. But they have agreed to perform here, and I will give detailed information about this concert in my March newsletter. For more info on the group, please visit www.thehenrygirls.com.
OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS
The following concerts are not Heartland Gallery events. They are presented by The Piper’s Hut Concert Series, which I highly recommend. As you probably know, many of the Piper’s Hut concerts were hosted by Heartland Gallery in my downtown Urbana space, and you can rest assured that any musicians booked by Piper’s Hut are worth your ticket purchase. Jim Malcolm performed twice in my former space, and I look forward to seeing and hearing him again. Visit www.pipers-hut.com for more info and ticket sales.
Monday, February 24 @8pm – Nuala Kennedy concert at the IMC, Urbana
Monday, March 3 @8pm – The Alan Kelly Gang concert at the IMC, Urbana
